GOING TO THE GO-GO

STOP. NOW GO.

STOP. NOW GO.

ABASS ISMAIL [Cinematographer/Photographer]:

“Accra is a place that is not so easy for some people to live. You’re living without a place or a car, you have to be struggling for troski. It’s not that easy to get a place for yourself in Accra.”

DEAN OSEI [Intern], right:

“My Accra is a place where everything is possible. Accra is a place where young, vibrant people from all over Ghana come to settle and achieve their dreams. It’s also challenging. Despite the challenges, it’s a place where you can succeed if you are really determined.”

ABASS:

“We’re sick and tired with the lights on and off. And water…for my place the water’s off for like three months before they bring it back. So we are sick and tired of those things. In Accra, it’s easy for some to move forward. Those who have the money, water and lights on in their house, they don’t care about the others struggling.”

GOING TO GO-GO

JESSICA [Style Contributor], Ashesi University:

“I think in the future we are going to come into ourselves and accept who we are, accept what Accra is, and move to really live to make an Accra for ourselves.”

ABASS:

“If we can solve this our problem with the lights and the water, making things easier for us – especially the transport – it would be better. I think Accra is a way of finding your own road to live your life – that’s what I’ve discovered.”

“I think the future of Accra is quite bright. The AMA [Accra Metropolitan Assembly] is planning a lot of stuff for the young ones out there. The inhabitants of Accra have to give the authorities an opportunity to be able to implement the policies.”Coconut Man 6 - photo by ACCRA [dot] ALT

DEAN OSEI:

“An example is the decongestion exercise the Assembly attempts sometimes in an effort to reduce the congestion on the streets. Often people end up demonstrating and that doesn’t allow for effective development. If we give those in power the chance to operate, then Accra will be a better place for all of us. It will be a place where we can live and love it.”

SELORM JAY [Assistant Producer] ACCRA [dot] ALT | [C.E.O.] Fullish Art:

“Accra to me is everything opposite of what it should be, but also there are many opportunities that a lot don’t see. That would be my Accra.”

STEPHEN [Intern], Ashesi University:

“I think the world itself is going around in circles and Ghana is also doing the same thing. From the trend that I’m noticing, I mean, we’ve seen times that people were wearing long shoes in the disco, tight jeans [vintage burger style]. Now we see lots of beads, lots of African print bags and everything.”

SELORM JAY:

“The future for the city – the only way out of this definitely is lots of education, lots of questioning the system, and also the youth. The youth must pay attention to the environment and have the attitude of giving more than receiving. That would make the future of Accra something to talk about.”
