STAIRWAY INTO THE ETHER

StairWay into the Ether by Naa Dei

Naa Dei’s 150ft Ga-Samai designed hand woven fabric installation draped the Black Star Arch in majestic beauty during the 2023 Chale Wote Festival.

Moving between earth and heaven, interacting with Ga-Adangbe Cosmology, communicating with the elements around and within patrons of the festival and all who used the area, the Ga-Samai was a sight to behold.

Ga samai are Ga proverbial visual symbols that embody the science, mythology, philosophies, and faith of the Ga-adangbe. They are from proverbs, parables, stories, and real-life experiences.

The Ga-samai are like a time capsule of the knowledge system of the people. Digging into tried and tested ways of appropriate living and interpersonal and inter-specie relationship.

Ga samai for strategic decision making.
AWALE TƐ

The above Samai, Awale Tɛ is a symbol of strategic decision making.  It refers to the pepples and pit game popular in Africa. It is a game that teaches the tactics of warfare.

Ga Samai for wisdom in dispute resolution, and unity of purpose.
ASHINƆ

Ashinɔ is symbolic of wisdom during arbitration and unity of purpose. It is from the proverb: Kɛ ashinɔ tse y3 onukpai aten lɛ eko elaajee – When a strand of beads breaks in the midst of elders, all beads are accounted for.

The Ga Samai has been featuring in Chale Wote for some years now. It has also re-possesed Ga-Adangbe iconic streets in the form of magnificent murals in vibrant colours matching the energy of the capital of Ghana.
