Happy New Year, peeps. We took a bit of a holiday break to recharge the batteries but we’re back now. Check out what’s on our music radar for 2015.
Video Title: REVENGE OF THE SPARTANS
Ghana’s fastest-speaking rapper, Sarkodie, tells all about his evolution in the music industry in his latest video, “Revenge of the Spartans,” off the upcoming album, Mary. From humble Tema beginnings to rocking shows around the globe, Sarkodie emphasizes his uphill journey in this bass-heavy tune. Dressed in simple black and white, Sarkodie is shown in a vast warehouse outfitted with a host of interesting characters that demonstrate how bad the MC is on the mic. From a cross-wielding priest to a baton twirler, bare-chested bboys, a man holding a shotgun, a drummer and two guys in face veils holding up the pyramid sign – ehhh! Chale, be very afraid.
Video Title: MIND GAMES
Over the past year, M.anifest has been keeping his video game consistent and on point. It seems 2015 will be no exception. Three days ago the MC released the video for “Mind Games.” M.anifest took it across the Atlantic for this one, shooting in Brooklyn, New York with director Garth Von Glehn (of Film Fam). The video explains how insane romantic partnerships can be when communication goes south. “You dey make I dey craze oh,” M.anifest croons as the video chronicles the good, the bad and the ugly encounters of a heated love affair.

Video Title: SWEDRU AGONA
Rapper Kwaw Kese has finally released the video for the popular street anthem, “Swedru Agona,” featuring a pioneer of hiplife music, Obrafour. The song also includes TeePhlow, the winner of Gh-One TV’s The Next Big Thing in GH Rap. Swedru Agona references Kwaw Kese’s hometown, a community in the central region of Ghana. On the heels of his release from Kumasi Central Prison, Kwaw debuts this video. The MC spent five weeks locked up after being arrested for smoking marijauna following a November 23rd show. Kwaw Kese was denied bail three times but finally released on December 30th on health grounds. The rapper bounces back strong and is already in the studio with D-Black and DJ Breezy of Black Avenue Muzik [ BAM] recording a new song.
Video Title: FORTRESS
Accra-based music maker, GhaliLeo, dropped this black and white lyrical visual three days ago for “Fortress.” GhaliLeo describes the song as “a metaphysical affinity for a muse named Caroline Calypso.” The visuals wax poetic, stepping in time with the artist’s words. “She must be the one…the one…the one.” “Fortress,” in some ways is an analysis of Blackness that wanders through stunning motifs of salt water, libation, flight, bare feet and ruins. GhaliLeo is currently working on his first album and “Fortress” will be the foundation for building this work from the ground up. We are looking forward to hearing more from dude in 2015.
Video Title: AFEMAKPOR
Ghanaian hip hop artist, Delasi aka SoulGod, shares the story of his father and his passing in the latest video project, “Afemakpor” from the album, Thought Journey. Afemapkor in Ewe means “not finding home.” The chromatic visuals show Delasi traveling through town, visiting a gravesite, and reflecting on life in a pool of water. The rapper returned late last year (just in time to perform at Sabolai Radio 2014!) after spending more than a year in Nairobi connecting with music artists. This track is no-doubt-about-it fire, displaying Delasi’s hynotic vocals backed by traditional Ewe borborbor sounds and 808 tropical bass drums.
