Lagos Rage Machine – Tinuke At Sabolai Radio

Chale! Who that? She dey force oo. Be like she mia you for the track top oo.

TRANSLATION: Man, who is that?! She’s quite good. But it seems she burned you on that song though.

That was my first reaction when I heard the lyricist Tinuke on an unreleased song by a fast rising star some months ago. Fast forward to the October edition of DZALA BUTIQ – ACCRA [dot] ALT’S art exhibition and sale – and I was sold. So was everyone who witnessed her perform that night.

Here was an emerging emcee who instinctively knew how to work a crowd, pack a punch…and wait for it, not boast endlessly about her prowess. She chooses instead to tell stories – her stories. That’s an anomaly for the majority of rappers in Ghana who command half of Tinuke’s buoyant stage presence and capacity to rhyme well.

According to writer Moshood Balogun, Tinuke’s debut mixtape, H.E.R (Having Extreme Rage), released in October of this year, is “essentially a declaration – a bold declaration by a self-assured artist who’s here do do her thing her way”. And what a declaration it is.

Tinuke is a Lagosian who came to Accra to continue university after schooling in Canada. She blends rapping, singing and songwriting and taps into several musical grids – hip hop, R&B, and house – to power her craft. Taking inspiration from life and art in all forms, Tinuke describes her sound as “trip music” and is on a path to explore her ability and talent to the fullest. Tinuke asserts on “Never A Slave ” that she wants to be different “like a needle in a haystack”. Given her current trajectory, non-conforming and exuding strictly positive vibes, she’s well on course.

Speaking of rage, Tinuke is bringing it all and then some to the 7th annual SABOLAI RADIO Music Festival this December 22 -23 at the Efua Sutherland Park. Be on the look out.

Until the festival rolls around, you can tap into some of Tinuke’s rage on her Soundcloud channel below.
