Abelo as he is affectionately called among his students has mentored many photographers, photojournalists and visual artists causing a storm in the West African region and beyond.
A Liberian refugee who came to his sister-land for education and be an active participant in creating the voice for the emancipated African, Abel has consistently used his lens to document the cultures of Ghanaians moving from Grand Ga naming ceremonies, hopping on sekondi-takoradi trains and spiriting to capture sacred Islamic burials in a region in the north of the country while transiting smoothly from analog photography to Digital image making.
Abel Gayvlor is by far one of the most imaginative photographers in Africa. His work as a lecturer at the University of Media, Arts & Communication- UNIMAC G.I.J in Ghana has undeniably given generations of scholars a glimpse into the incredible diversity that characterizes image making in West Africa.
His Salon/ Lab will introduce us to a range of perspectives in ways photography creates cultural identities within contemporary African thought.
