CHALE WOTE 2023 ARTIST- CHARITY DERBY AKETI

Charity Derby Akeiti is a Ghanaian Graphic Designer, Painter, Sculptor, Textile Designer, Art Journalist, Coordinator and Consultant. She holds a Fine Arts Degree from the Delta State University, Nigeria.

Akeiti’s work is often a blend of surrealism and cultural conceptualisation, presented through figures superimposed on bleached fabric instead of the conventional canvas.

These figures are usually presented without their pupils – representing the unconscious lack of acknowledgement of, and failure to embrace African history, mythology and the heroic contributions of the ancestors.

Charity wants this relentlessly echoed and evident in her art because, as she says “Without the ability to fight back external forces, resistance would not exist. Art speaks to us and connects our visions of the reality of the past, with the present.”

In line with this year’s Chale Wote theme, ‘Magneto Motherland’, Akeiti’s work will focus on post-resistance, with particular emphasis on the contributions of women and their application of spirituality in the bid to fight against or push back external forces.
